Victoria’s popping off this February!

  • January 27, 2020

As we're still in the thick of winter, the assumption is that there's a big drop in planned activities and events. On the contrary, there are a host of fun activities this February in Victoria! We'll explore just 2 of many entertaining events taking place in this popular tourist destination, located on the southern tip of beautiful Vancouver Island.

VICTORIA TRAD WEEKEND

Tradition is the very lifeblood of music. People learn how to play from their elders, picking up melodies that have been passed on from generation to generation. For some, those tunes go back as far as “classic rock” – for some, traditional refers to tunes that are hundreds of years old and carry the stories of entire cultures.

Trad music is a genre that celebrates these musical cultures, bringing together players from various backgrounds to share the music that defines them. Some of the best musicians in the country are heavily inspired by Trad, which consist of celtic, metis, bluegrass, folk and jazz genres. Take the opportunity to appreciate Trad music in all its' expressive forms through the guitar, fiddle, accordion, banjo and the human voice.

Make your plans to visit Victoria on February 14 and 15 for the Victoria Trad Weekend. The first day of this mini-festival is the concert showcasing the incredible talents of internationally renowned musicians. The venue is the First Church of Christ - doors open at 7:00 pm and the show gets under way by 7:30 pm. The next day, scheduled workshops are led by master musicians for the fiddle, guitar and banjo. There are even singing classes and a Trad band ensemble that invites aspiring musicians to get together to arrange a piece and perform it. All workshops take place at the Esquimalt United Church. The Trad Weekend is a wonderful event, not only for all those who appreciate the genre, but for all music lovers!

TINDER TALES

One of Canada’s best comedy showcases is making its' way to Victoria! Tinder Tales features a revolving cast of talented comics and storytellers sharing their favourite dating horror stories, which are often hilarious and borders on the ridiculous at times. Taking place here in Victoria on Valentine’s Day, this show is perfect for singles spending the day alone, or it can serve as a sobering reminder to couples that maybe they've got it pretty good after all. If you're seeking the antidote to Valentine's Day, catch Tinder Tales at the Victoria Event Centre on February 14!
