The Victoria Government Parliament Buildings were originally constructed in 1893 and the architecture was done by Francis Rattenbury who was 25 at the time and made the sketches in honor of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
The buildings are used during the day for BC Provincial Government, and this is where the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia is located, the Speaker and Sergeant-At-Arms and others.
In the evening it lights the city of Victoria with more than 3,300 light bulbs to cast a presence over the city letting residents know the power of the government stands guard over the city.
Visitors to the buildings can take guided tours, with a guide that will explain in detail the architecture and what goes on in the building today just as it did after its 1893 construction on Belleville Street in Downtown Victoria.
On the lawn of the Victoria Government Parliament Buildings stands a statue of Queen Victoria and there is a statue of a soldier to commemorate the province’s World War I, World War II and the Korean War soldiers that were killed while fighting for their country. There is also a statue of Captain George Vancouver, which is gold covered, that stands at the top of the central dome of the building.
This is a place to visit while staying at the Days Inn Victoria on the Harbour not only for the guided tours that are educational, but also for the beauty of the Neo-Baroque buildings and the intricate statutes that stand guard over the building. This is one of the places that once visited will make a large impression on any visitor, for the importance of what the building stands for and the vision of the 25 year old architect that envisioned the buildings that have stood since their construction in 1893.
The hotel near by the parliament buildings is the Days Inn Victoria on the Harbour.
